Designed by Andrew Loudon and Janine Crimmins, “A Garden for Otium” was awarded Large Gold at the Holker Garden Festival 2011.

The Latin word “Otium” refers to a state of mind induced by relaxation, which allows the ability to forget the pressures of Everyday life. The garden has been designed to be a refuge in which to achieve Otium.
Local materials and plants are used throughout with planting designed to thrive in a Cumbrian setting.
Two interlocking circles form the shape of the garden with a spherical water feature in the first circle surrounded by a soft planting scheme of blue and white summer flowers. Nepeta, Campanula and grasses give movement and attract local bees.
The second circle is surrounded by a dry stone wall with a wooden bench seat curving around the inside. Planting is naturalistic and tranquil using cream foxgloves with hostas and ferns underneath the seating.
Andrew and Janine are multi-award winners in their respective fields of dry stone walling and garden design.
