It’s amazing the difference a week can make in the garden. All the veggies and fruits are growing away happily and nothing seems to deter the tenacious weeds.
The first week of summer sees the new plot completely cleared and almost fully planted. Arches are in place, awaiting the beans, cucumbers and squash and the ground is now suitable to sow my carrots.
I mainly have a no dig policy and do tend to cell raise most things to avoid weed competition with seedlings but Carrots and Parsnips need to be sown direct to avoid root disturbance.

The darling little swallows arrived on Tuesday to a thorough drenching and whilst they appeared unamused, the garden did need the rain as April had not been forthcoming with her showers and the water butt supplies are already diminishing.
Half of the excitement of a new garden is seeing what grows naturally and I seem to have plenty of volunteer Borage and pumpkin seedlings (from previous tenant). I have also sown some of the less well known White Borage and planted my Bocking 14 Comfrey root cuttings. This version of Comfrey has the benefit of being sterile, so will not try to take over the plot.
The long range weather forecast seems to suggest warmer night temperatures but as tempting as it may be, I will keep the Dahlias and tender veggies under cover at night for a couple more weeks…just in case!
