Gardening Scotland 2012: Main outdoor gardens

Gardening Scotland has earned a reputation for providing inspiration to visitors on how to make the most out of their outdoor space and one of the ways of providing this inspiration is through the beautiful show and college gardens.

The showfield, near to Edinburgh Airport, has been transformed over the last few weeks into a collection of inspirational gardens.

From raised flower beds to a dilapidated garden shed, every visitor can take away gardening hints and tips and inspiration for their own gardens and green spaces.

All of the gardens featured plants which tolerate the northern climate and it was refreshing to see a kaleidoscope of colours sharing the same planting scheme.

The show gardens in more detail

• Border Aggregates & Landscaping Supplies/Services – “Sam’s Olympic Journey”
Paralymic themed – to raise more awareness of people’s disabilities and how to overcome them. Samantha is a 16 year old girl, now from Gordon in the Scottish Borders, who had a freak accident and was paralysed. Her determination and ambition to compete in the Olympics is an inspiration.
• Dry Stone Walling Association, West of Scotland – “The Bee Garden”
The garden shows the symbiotic relationship between humans, bees and horticulture.
• Dundee College and Trellis – “Garden of Tranquility”
The garden is a commission on behalf of Trellis; which is the national Scottish charity that supports, promotes, and develops the use of horticulture to improve health, well-being and life opportunities for all.
The garden depicts a sense of calm and peace and will be relocated to Roxburgh House in Dundee, where patients and their family and friends will have somewhere tranquille to reflect.
• Gardening Leave and Ray Howie – “Serenity Flower Garden”
The “Serenity Flower Garden” is dedicated to all the men and women who have fallen in service, or who have been injured in service, to those who have served and to those who are still serving, and lastly but not least, to all the dedicated staff at Gardening Leave.
The garden is also a way in which to raise awareness of Gardening Leave as a charity and the work they do with the men and women of the Armed Forces.
• Ivy Maud Design and Macmillan Cancer Support – “Legacy”
A woodland styled garden with a focal point shelter.
The theme is the role of legacy giving to Macmillan and how that allows others to be supported in the journey through cancer.
Much of the garden will be planted in shades of green, which is Macmillan’s colour and represents rest, refreshment and life.
• Rococo Plants and Gardens  – “Scott of the Antarctic”
100 years since Captain Scotts race to the South Pole.
Half of the garden will represent Antarctica and the other half will be a warm and exotic planting scheme to illustrate the current problem of global warming and associated melting of Antarctica’s ice.
This effect will be created using plants and various artifacts to represent the different landscapes and an archway made to look like ice dividing the two areas.
• Scottish Agricultural College Edinburgh – “Plant Explorer’s Garden”
Garden inspired by conservation aware enthusiast who has travelled the world to see plants in their natural setting, and built a garden based on his experiences.
• Scottish Agricultural College Edinburgh – “Cornucopia, the Horn of Plenty”
A tribute to the abundance of nature: promoting northern berries.
• Elmwood College and Garden for Life – The Living Garden Show Garden
“Fruit for Life – take a walk to the wild side of Scotland’s natural harvest”
The garden design includes native species or plants bred in Scotland, which are edible or have a traditional purpose.
These also provide nectar and shelter for bees and butterflies and other garden creatures.
