Lifting and storing large bags of compost can be a problem so we were keen to try the new Miracle Gro Expand ‘n Gro concentrated compost.
Sold as a bag of dehydrated compost, Miracle-Gro claim that it will expand and grow to three times it’s bulk, making up to 50 litres when mixed with same volume of water.
Expand ‘n gro contains enough Scotts Miracle-Gro plant food to feed plants for up to 6 months.
The packaging states that this compost has excellent moisture retention properties which makes it ideal for container and basket planting.
Lightweight
Miracle Gro Expand ‘n Gro is marketed as being very much lighter in weight to carry than a 50 litre bag of equivalent multipurpose compost.
It’s compact size (about 60cm x 30cm x 10cm) will make it handy for those with limited space either in the car boot or at home and for people who find carrying heavy, large bags of compost problematic.
First impressions,
The rich light brown compost is quite fine and fibrous in structure, it should be quite suitable for potting on very young seedlings.
Expand ‘n Gro compost does contain added chemical Miracle-Gro nutrients, so may be too rich for small seed sowing and unsuitable for organic growing.
The re-sealable bag ensures any remaining unused compost stays airtight.
Easy to use
Simply fill your chosen container to 1/3 of the amount required and add the same volume of water.
Watch as the compost expands, filling the container within minutes and then just sow or plant as normal.
Value for money
Miracle Gro multipurpose compost averages about £7.00 for a 50 litre bag so at £10.00, the Expand ‘n Gro does work out more expensive. However, for some the benefits may outweigh the additional cost.
Putting it to the test
We are going to experiment with two tubs of compost; one a standard own garden centre brand and the other the new Miracle Gro Expand ‘n gro.
In each of these tubs we have sown eight dwarf french bean seeds, so all we need to do now is wait!
