Carlisle U3A Talk

Our Successful Seed Sowing presentation was the choice of the Carlisle U3A Gardening Group on Monday 18th March.

Held at the wonderful new Cumbria Wildlife Trust facility to a group of over thirty five members, we discussed how to get the best when growing from seed.

Many members were already growing from seed and a number wanted to try to rectify problems they regularly encounter.

One of the ideas for the afternoon was to also hold a seed swap, enabling members to swap surplus or self collected seed. Among the flower and herb seeds were also quite a number of heritage vegetables.

We discussed great ways to use recycled food containers and toilet roll inners as seed trays and biodegradable plant plots. A member even brought some of her spare seed trays for others to make use of.

When it comes to plant propagation, there is no better reading than Carol Kleins’ Grow Your Own Garden book. We always take this to our relevant events and a good number of members looked like they would be ordering their own copy.
